Intracytoplasmic Sperm
Injection (ICSI)
What is the difference between intracytoplasmic
sperm injection (ICSI) and In Vitro fertilization (IVF)?
INTRACYTOPLASMIC SPERM INJECTION (ICSI)
In some cases, failure of fertilization may be overcome with intra – cytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI). In such cases, fertilization may be achieved by injecting one carefully selected sperm directly into each mature egg (ICSI). The remaining steps are similar to those of IVF. Intra-
Cytoplasmic Sperm Injection is usually indicated for couples with history of fertilization failure in previous IVF cycles or those with severe male factor (very few, mostly abnormal or immotile sperm).
The success rates for IVF/ICSI are higher than ovulation induction and IUI and will be recommended for couples who have had previous unsuccessful treatments with other methods.
